Manchester United’s FA Cup victory on Saturday was a deeply emotional event for Marcus Rashford, who was seen shedding tears of joy following the 2-1 win against Manchester City.
The triumph at Wembley Stadium, where early goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo set the stage, marked an unexpected win over the Premier League champions.
Rashford played a pivotal role, starting the match and contributing significantly throughout. Garnacho capitalized on a mistake by Josko Gvardiol to score the opening goal, and Rashford later demonstrated his playmaking ability with a brilliant 70-yard pass to Garnacho. Garnacho then set up Bruno Fernandes, who assisted Mainoo in scoring United’s second goal.
Despite a late goal by Jeremy Doku that brought the score to 2-1, City failed to overcome United’s lead. Pep Guardiola’s team struggled to break through United’s defense, and as the final whistle blew, United secured their 13th FA Cup title.
Amid the celebrations, Rashford was visibly moved, engaging with the fans and acknowledging their support as he cried. On Instagram, he expressed his connection to the club, writing, “People want to know what Man United means to me!”
Jadon Sancho, who had been on loan at Borussia Dortmund after falling out of favor with manager Erik ten Hag, was among the first to congratulate Rashford. Commenting on Rashford’s post, Sancho wrote, “Love you brother,” highlighting the strong bond and mutual respect between the players despite the season’s challenges.
Rashford’s season had been tumultuous, marked by a decline in form and uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford.
Despite signing a lucrative five-year contract the previous summer, his goal-scoring drought led to questions about his role in the team.
In January, disciplinary action was taken against him after he reported sick for training following an unauthorized trip to Belfast, casting further doubt on his commitment to the club.
However, Rashford’s dedication to Manchester United, where he has been since joining the youth academy at age seven, was evident in his emotional response after the FA Cup win. This moment served to reaffirm his loyalty to the club and silence his critics.
Despite being omitted from England’s preliminary squad for the upcoming European Championships, his performance in the final and the support from fans and teammates underscored his enduring importance to Manchester United.
