Arsenal is reportedly considering the sale of Emile Smith Rowe to enhance their chances of acquiring Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz. Despite being regarded as one of Mikel Arteta’s key players during the 2021-22 Premier League season, Smith Rowe’s limited playing time and a decline in his status within the team have led to his potential departure.
The dynamic playmaker, who contributed 10 goals and two assists last season, has seen reduced action, playing just 265 minutes in 16 top-flight appearances since the commencement of the 2022-23 season, currently sidelined due to another injury. Arteta, while acknowledging Smith Rowe’s importance, expressed a hint of frustration in recent comments.
With Smith Rowe’s contract expiring in 2026 and renewal prospects diminishing, Arsenal is contemplating including him in a potential offer for Luiz in the upcoming January or next summer transfer window, according to Fichajes. Luiz, an Arsenal target, has thrived at Aston Villa with 18 goals and 16 assists in 170 appearances, including eight this season.
Although Unai Emery is unlikely to part ways with Luiz mid-season, given Villa’s Champions League aspirations, Luiz’s contract until 2026 raises uncertainties about his future move. Smith Rowe, who made his first-team debut under Emery at Arsenal, may find a reunion with the Spanish manager in the cards. As Arsenal aims for success in multiple competitions, the potential departure of Smith Rowe adds an intriguing layer to their transfer strategy.
