Ajax has terminated their association with Maurice Steijn after only four months of his leadership. This 49-year-old coach was granted a three-year contract earlier this summer, amid a period of transformation for the Amsterdam club.
Steijn’s brief tenure at the Johan Cruijff ArenA was marred by a lackluster performance, with just two victories in his first 11 games, causing Ajax to languish in the Eredivisie relegation zone. In a statement, Steijn acknowledged that after discussions with the board, it was concluded that this move was in the best interest of Ajax, even though he regretted it.
He expressed his commitment to restoring Ajax to its former glory and thanked the fans and his colleagues. Steijn’s assistant, Hedwiges Maduro, will temporarily assume control of the team where his playing career commenced and subsequently flourished during a four-year stint in the Dutch capital.
Ajax’s immediate fixtures include an encounter with Brighton in the Europa League group stage, followed by a crucial clash against PSV on Sunday. The club now embarks on a quest to regain its former prominence.
