Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bolster his team’s strength in the January transfer window, recognizing the need for improved squad depth. This decision comes after a disappointing 3-1 loss to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup, where a makeshift Arsenal side struggled at the London Stadium.
Injuries to key players like Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, and Gabriel Jesus have exposed the team’s vulnerabilities, prompting Arteta to take immediate action. The Gunners are concerned about future challenges that could hinder their progress in the Premier League and the Champions League.
In light of this, Arsenal has set its sights on Sporting Lisbon’s Geny Catamo, a promising 22-year-old player with a reputed £52 million release clause. Catamo has been a standout performer for Sporting this season, excelling as both a right and left wing-back in the team’s 3-4-2-1 formation. In 13 appearances, he has contributed with two assists and two goals, drawing the attention of Arsenal’s scouting team.
Catamo’s versatility, as a full-back and winger, would provide Arteta with valuable attacking options. Although his release clause might seem daunting, Sporting may consider selling him for a reduced fee in either the January window or the following summer to avoid losing him for free when his contract expires in June 2025. This potential signing could be a cost-effective solution for Arsenal, strengthening their squad depth and addressing their recent struggles.
