Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s new manager, faces significant expectations in his debut Premier League season. Two seasons ago, under new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea finished 12th. Last season saw an improvement, with Chelsea securing sixth place and ending the campaign on a strong note.
However, former Chelsea player William Gallas has set the bar higher for Maresca. In an interview with Gambling Zone, Gallas emphasized that the primary goal for Maresca should be to secure a top-four finish.
Gallas acknowledged Maresca’s impressive work at Leicester City and his experience as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, suggesting that Chelsea is adopting a long-term strategy similar to Arsenal’s with Mikel Arteta.
Despite recognizing Maresca as a long-term appointment, Gallas expressed skepticism about Chelsea’s current squad’s ability to clinch the Premier League title.
He highlighted the precedent of Mauricio Pochettino, who was dismissed despite finishing sixth, to underscore the pressure on Maresca to perform.
According to Gallas, achieving a top-four finish and qualifying for the Champions League is essential for Maresca to be deemed successful. Failure to meet this target, he warned, would likely result in Maresca being viewed as a failure, given Chelsea’s historically high expectations and unpredictable management decisions.
