Manchester United have reportedly declined a specific contractual clause during transfer discussions involving Mason Greenwood. The young forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in La Liga and scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, has attracted interest from several prominent clubs across Europe, including Spain, Turkey, and Italy.
This loan followed an internal review at United which concluded he would not continue at Old Trafford after charges against him were dropped.
Lazio has emerged as a leading suitor for Greenwood, offering €20 million for his transfer and proposing a sell-on clause that would entitle United to 50 percent of any future transfer fee. Despite Greenwood’s contract running until 2025, Manchester United are intent on selling him this season for a substantial fee and have set their valuation at £30 million.
Lazio’s bid has been motivated by their need to replace Felipe Anderson, who is set to join Palmeiras in Brazil. In a bid to make their offer more attractive, Lazio included goalkeeper Christos Mandas in the deal, valuing him at €20 million. However, United have expressed doubts about Mandas’ valuation, complicating the negotiations.
Negotiations between United and Lazio are ongoing, with Juventus also showing interest in Greenwood. Juventus’ involvement adds complexity to the potential transfer, as they monitor the situation closely.
The backdrop to these negotiations includes recent changes in Lazio’s ownership, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a 25 percent stake in the club, suggesting potential new directions for the team. Despite these developments, it appears increasingly likely that Greenwood will depart Manchester United.
In summary, Manchester United have rejected a proposed clause in a potential deal for Mason Greenwood. Lazio’s offer of €20 million plus a sell-on clause was not sufficient to meet United’s £30 million valuation.
Additionally, Lazio’s attempt to include goalkeeper Christos Mandas in the deal, valued at €20 million, did not convince United. Meanwhile, Juventus remains a potential contender, keeping a close watch on the ongoing negotiations.
