Savinho became Troyes’ record signing in 2022, acquired for €12.5 million (£10.5 million/$13.6 million). However, rather than contributing directly to the Ligue 1 team’s efforts to improve their standings, he was immediately loaned out to PSV Eindhoven.
During his absence, Troyes suffered relegation in the 2022-23 season. For the 2023-24 season, Savinho joined Girona on loan, where he played a key role in the club’s impressive campaign, scoring 19 goals and helping them secure a historic promotion to the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Troyes continued their decline, experiencing a second consecutive relegation. Savinho has since been transferred to Manchester City, the flagship club of the City Football Group (CFG), for a fee of £33.7 million ($43.5 million).
The City Football Group is a prime example of a global multi-club organization, established in 2013 and now encompassing 11 clubs across four continents, along with several “partner clubs” in which CFG has no direct ownership.
Savinho is not the first player to move between CFG clubs without appearing for the new team; for instance, Aaron Mooy transferred to Manchester City from Melbourne City in 2016 but was immediately loaned out and subsequently sold. Similarly, Mix Diskerud was on Manchester City’s roster for three years after his transfer from New York City.
Manchester City aims to extend its dominance in English football by seeking a fifth consecutive Premier League title in the 2024-25 season.
However, with manager Pep Guardiola’s contract set to expire next summer and speculation linking him to the England national team job, there is a possibility that the club might be nearing the end of a remarkable era under his leadership.
