Collin Millar of The Athletic highlighted on X that Manchester City’s ability to sign Savinho from a sister club, despite him never having played there and having been loaned to another sister club, raises concerns within elite football. All three clubs involved are part of the City Football Group (CFG).
Savinho became Troyes’ record signing in 2022, costing €12.5 million (£10.5 million/$13.6 million). Instead of contributing to Troyes’ success in Ligue 1, he was immediately loaned to PSV Eindhoven. In his absence, Troyes were relegated in the 2022-23 season.
Subsequently, Savinho joined Girona on loan for the 2023-24 season, where he played a key role, scoring 19 goals and assisting in the club’s unexpected qualification for the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Troyes faced back-to-back relegations. Savinho has now transferred to CFG’s flagship club, Manchester City, for £33.7 million ($43.5 million).
The City Football Group is a prominent example of a multi-club organization globally. Established in 2013, it includes 11 clubs across four continents and a few “partner clubs” where CFG does not hold direct ownership. Savinho is not the first player to move within CFG without playing for the new team.
Aaron Mooy, for instance, joined Manchester City from Melbourne City in 2016, was immediately loaned out, and sold the following year. Similarly, Mix Diskerud was with Manchester City for three years after transferring from New York City FC without playing for them.
Manchester City aims to continue their dominance in English football during the 2024-25 season by securing a fifth consecutive Premier League title.
However, with Pep Guardiola’s contract expiring next summer and rumors linking him to the England national team, the end of this successful period for City might be nearer than many had anticipated.
