BREAKING NEWS CONFIRMED: Following the £30M sales of Lokonga and Tavares, Arsenal swiftly secure a £50M Real Madrid target as Edu and Josh Kroenke head to Spain to finalize the deal.”

Arsenal have begun negotiations with representatives of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, aiming for a €25 million transfer, according to FootballTransfers.

Sources indicate that Merino is receptive to the move and has communicated his intent to leave Real Sociedad this summer.

Arsenal is currently prepared to offer €25 million for Merino, whose contract runs until 2025. Given the player’s desire to exit, Real Sociedad might have to consider selling him.

FootballTransfers reports that Merino’s name surfaced during Arsenal’s discussions to acquire his teammate, Martin Zubimendi. Although a deal for Zubimendi seems improbable now, Merino might join the north London club before the close of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Direct talks with Merino have yet to occur due to his involvement in Euro 2024, but Arsenal is earnestly contemplating signing the Spanish international.

The potential transfer of Merino to Arsenal hinges on Real Sociedad’s willingness to accept the €25 million offer and their readiness to sell at that price.

The 28-year-old Merino scored seven goals and provided four assists in 39 appearances in La Liga and the Champions League last season. Additionally, his relatively consistent fitness, having missed only 13 games due to injury in the past five seasons, is seen as a significant advantage by Arsenal.

Another factor in Arsenal’s favor is their positive relationship with Real Sociedad, highlighted by past transfers such as Kieran Tierney and Nacho Monreal. This connection could facilitate the negotiations for Merino.

So far this summer, David Raya is the only player Arsenal has signed, having secured him on a permanent deal from Brentford.
