Manchester City may begin their Premier League title defense without making any new signings during the summer, according to an analysis. Although the club has been linked with players like Bruno Guimaraes and Joshua Kimmich, the first month of the offseason has been quiet.
Transfer activity is typically slow early in the summer, as many players are involved in international competitions, so it’s not surprising that rumors have been slow to gain momentum.
The futures of key players like Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Ederson are still uncertain, with each linked to potential departures. It remains to be seen whether these rumors will translate into actual moves later in the summer.
If these players stay, Manchester City would likely be content to continue with the squad that won a fourth consecutive Premier League title and narrowly missed out on the Champions League, losing to the finalists.
Savio, a winger from Troyes who has been on loan at Girona, is expected to sign for City. However, his involvement with Brazil at the Copa America means there may be no movement on this front for several weeks. Although Troyes paid between £5–10 million for Savio, who never played for them, his performances at Girona have increased his value, though it remains unclear to what extent.
The focus might shift to potential departures. Joao Cancelo has stated he won’t consider his future until after the Euros.
Pep Guardiola has expressed willingness to welcome him back if no buyer is found, although reintegrating Cancelo could be challenging given the circumstances of his exit and his subsequent comments.
Reports from Spain suggest City would demand £25 million from Barcelona for Cancelo, either this summer or next as part of a loan deal. Additionally, they are reportedly seeking £20 million for Sergio Gomez, who is linked with Real Sociedad.
City has secured £25 million from pre-arranged deals for Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with Doyle potentially bringing in £5 million and Harwood-Bellis £20 million. Liam Delap could be another academy graduate to depart.
Kalvin Phillips is also on the market after a dramatic drop in form. Recouping the £42 million spent on him seems unlikely, but any sale contributing to a summer influx exceeding £100 million would be a good return. Potential additional deals could bring in another £15 to £20 million.
If the club opts not to make significant changes, this summer could still be successful, setting up a future spending spree when market conditions are more favorable. City fans expect at least one or two new signings to refresh the squad.
