Albert Sambi Lokonga’s decision to join Sevilla has reportedly angered Arsenal’s management, especially since better proposals were on the table. The move comes amidst a busy transfer period for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar overseeing numerous changes.
Alongside Lokonga’s departure, Mika Biereth has signed permanently with Sturm Graz, and Nuno Tavares is set to join Lazio on a loan that will turn permanent in 2025.
Lokonga, who joined Arsenal from Anderlecht in the summer of 2021, initially impressed at the Emirates. However, his form declined in 2022, leading to a loan spell at Crystal Palace in January 2023, followed by a full season at Luton Town. Despite some decent performances, Lokonga’s future at Arsenal seemed uncertain.
According to journalist David Ornstein, Lokonga will join Sevilla on loan with an option to make the move permanent for about £10 million next year. This is a notable financial hit for Arsenal, who paid nearly double that amount to sign him in 2021.
Ornstein also revealed that Fiorentina had expressed interest in Lokonga and were ready to make a more attractive offer than Sevilla. However, Lokonga’s preference for Sevilla forced Arsenal to accept the less favorable deal. Ornstein tweeted: “Arsenal have a 25% sell-on clause in Sevilla deal for Albert Sambi Lokonga. Applies if loan from #AFC turns permanent (€12m option) & midfielder sold in future. Fiorentina prepared higher bid but 24yo only wanted #SevillaFC. Medical Friday.”
Sevilla’s strategic negotiation has put them in an advantageous position. They secured an option, rather than an obligation, to sign Lokonga permanently in the summer of 2025. This means that if Lokonga performs well, Sevilla can sign him for just £10 million.
If he does not meet expectations, they can send him back to Arsenal. This scenario is far from ideal for Arsenal, who risk a greater financial loss on Lokonga in the summer of 2025 when his contract has just one year remaining.
As the transfer window continues, Arsenal will need to carefully navigate these challenges to avoid further setbacks. The club’s management must find a way to mitigate the financial and strategic impact of Lokonga’s departure and ensure that their remaining transfer activities strengthen the team.
