Arsenal are actively participating in the transfer market to strengthen their squad, which finished second in the Premier League for the 2023/24 season.
They have now joined the competition to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who represented Ukraine at Euro 2024 and is also on the radar of top Premier League teams, including Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
The Gunners are looking to revamp their goalkeeper options for the upcoming season. They recently made David Raya’s loan from Brentford permanent and have shown interest in Wolves’ backup goalkeeper Dan Bentley. With Aaron Ramsdale expected to leave due to a diminished role, manager Mikel Arteta is keen to secure a new backup goalkeeper.
According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, Arsenal has inquired about Lunin’s availability. The 25-year-old goalkeeper became pivotal for Real Madrid last season, making 31 appearances following an injury to Thibaut Courtois. Despite his strong performances, Lunin’s future at Real Madrid is uncertain, as his contract has only 12 months remaining and renewal talks have hit a deadlock.
Real Madrid is keen to keep Lunin and has been negotiating a new contract with him. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has praised Lunin’s performances, calling him “brilliant” and “outstanding.” However, the lack of a new contract agreement has given Premier League clubs a chance to pursue the talented goalkeeper.
Lunin could be a significant addition to Arsenal, offering robust competition for the starting goalkeeper spot. His potential move to North London could be further facilitated by the presence of his fellow Ukrainian, Oleksandr Zinchenko, in the Arsenal squad.
However, Lunin’s preference to be a first-choice goalkeeper could influence his decision, as Arsenal’s acquisition of David Raya indicates that Lunin might initially be considered a backup.
