In January, it became increasingly apparent that Arsenal had a pressing need for a center-forward. The lack of a reliable striker during the critical festive period likely played a significant role in their inability to secure the league title.
This deficiency was particularly evident in their December match against West Ham, where, despite creating 30 goal-scoring opportunities, Arsenal failed to find the back of the net and ultimately lost the game. This match highlighted the team’s struggle to convert their chances into goals at that point in the season.
As the season progressed, Arsenal’s situation improved significantly. Competing closely with Manchester City for the Premier League title, they demonstrated their attacking prowess in the return fixture against West Ham by scoring six goals.
Although Arsenal fell short of winning the title, they concluded the season as the league’s second-highest scorers, amassing an impressive total of 91 goals.
Given this marked improvement in their goal-scoring ability, the question arises: Is it still necessary for Arsenal to pursue a new forward? While the urgency may have diminished, recent developments suggest that the club is still actively seeking to bolster their attacking options.
Initially, it appeared that Arsenal was poised to sign Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko during the summer transfer window. The RB Leipzig forward had a reasonable release clause, and it seemed that Arsenal only needed to meet the fee to secure his transfer. However, Sesko is now set to remain in Germany, having agreed to sign a new contract with Leipzig.
In response to this development, Arsenal has redirected their attention to Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres. The club’s interest in the Sporting striker has been known for some time, but they have recently intensified their efforts to bring him to the Emirates.
According to reports, Gyokeres is “on the verge” of joining Arsenal, indicating that the club is close to finalizing the deal and adding the talented forward to their squad.
