Manchester United have been linked with numerous players during this transfer window, creating a lot of buzz around the club. However, few of these rumored moves have materialized into actual signings. So far, the only new additions to the squad this summer have been Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
There are several areas where the Red Devils need to strengthen to build a truly competitive team. However, it is unrealistic to expect all these reinforcements to be secured in a single transfer window; progress will need to happen over time.
One thing the club should avoid, however, is bringing in a player for a position where they are already well-covered. The question arises: why would Manchester United want to sign Ivan Toney when they already have Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the squad?
Yet, it appears they are interested. According to Football Insider, Manchester United has decided to make a bid for the Brentford striker after his valuation dropped to £50 million. The same publication reported last month that Brentford reduced Toney’s asking price from £90 million to £60 million.
Toney is undoubtedly a talented player, and having him in the squad wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. However, if Manchester United were intent on acquiring him, they should have done so before signing Zirkzee. It’s also unlikely that manager Erik ten Hag will suddenly adopt a two-striker formation, similar to Simone Inzaghi’s system.
Unlike Manchester City, who are at a more advanced stage in their project, Manchester United must be more selective in their transfer decisions.
At this point, reinforcing the central defense and adding a defensive midfielder should be higher priorities than bringing in another striker.
Although Toney is a quality player, he is not a must-sign for Manchester United this summer. Nevertheless, the final decision is out of our hands. It remains to be seen what Manchester United’s decision-makers, like Dan Ashworth and his team, will ultimately decide.
