Unfortunately, a recent injury to Yoro has complicated matters further, potentially pushing Manchester United to accelerate their search for another center-back before the transfer window closes. This need for defensive reinforcements was already under consideration, but Yoro’s injury has made it more urgent.
The club now appears to be revisiting their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, a player they have been linked with before. According to The Sun, Manchester United is preparing a new offer for Branthwaite, a one-cap English defender, believing that a bid of £50 million might entice Everton to sell.
Previously, United had made an offer of around £35 million plus £8 million in add-ons, but Everton rejected it, holding out for a much higher sum of £70 million.
However, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the exact nature of Manchester United’s pursuit of Branthwaite. The Athletic reported last month that United had already submitted two offers, with one of them being a £50 million bid that was also turned down by Everton.
There was even a report suggesting that Everton was asking for as much as £90 million for the 22-year-old defender, a figure that seems excessive for a player who has only played one full season at the Premier League level.
Amidst the uncertainty over Branthwaite’s valuation and the actual bids made by Manchester United, one thing appears clear: the player is keen to move to Old Trafford and has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the club.
Despite this, it remains unclear what fee would convince Everton to part ways with Branthwaite this summer. Given the likely high cost, Manchester United may need to shift their focus to alternative defensive targets.
