Arsenal has yet to officially pursue Real Sociedad’s standout midfielder, as reported by Spanish outlet El Diario Vasco. The Gunners are keen on acquiring a new midfielder during this transfer window and have reportedly reached a personal agreement with Mikel Merino.
However, despite these personal terms being settled, Arsenal has not yet made a formal offer for Merino, though such a move is anticipated shortly.
Merino, who has a release clause of £52 million, could potentially be acquired for as little as £26 million due to his contract entering its final year. The 28-year-old midfielder might soon make his way to Arsenal if negotiations proceed as expected.
So far, Arsenal’s activity in the summer transfer window has been relatively subdued, with only the signings of David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori. Following back-to-back second-place finishes in the Premier League, fans and analysts alike anticipated more vigorous efforts in the transfer market.
However, the recent departure of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham has generated additional funds, which Arsenal could potentially allocate towards securing Merino’s transfer.
Merino has shown a strong interest in joining Arsenal, making it crucial for the club to finalize a transfer fee that would bring the Euro 2024 winner to North London. His arrival would significantly bolster Arsenal’s options in the left-sided central midfield role.
During the 2023/24 season, Merino distinguished himself as one of the best in Europe’s top-five leagues, leading in duels won. Additionally, his skill set in recoveries, tackling, and creative play was evident, as he contributed eight goals and five assists over the course of the season.
However, Arsenal must act quickly, as Merino has not dismissed the possibility of a move to Barcelona. Therefore, if Arsenal wishes to secure his services, they will need to expedite their efforts to avoid losing out on this talented midfielder to another top European club.
