Manchester City fans have expressed concern following Kyle Walker’s recent comments ahead of the new season. The 34-year-old right-back, fresh off his successful campaign with England at the European Championships, where they reached the final against Spain, has sparked discussion with his ambitions for the upcoming season.
Walker, who missed Manchester City’s pre-season tour of the United States due to an extended holiday after the Euros, has since returned to the City Football Academy to prepare for the new season. As part of his preparations, Walker, who has been appointed as Manchester City’s captain, has set some personal goals, notably in the area of goal-scoring—an unusual focus for a player in his position.
In the latest episode of his podcast, “You Will Never Beat Kyle Walker,” which is available on BBC Sounds, Walker shared his desire to contribute more goals for the team during the 2024-25 season. Speaking to co-host Chris Hughes, Walker said, “I’m really going to try this season to get a couple more goals because I think I get in nice areas.” Acknowledging his age, he added, “I’m 34 now; I need to start adding that to my game.”
Walker’s aspirations have caused a stir among Manchester City supporters, who have taken to social media to express their anxiety. Some fans fear that Walker’s shift in focus towards goal-scoring might distract him from his defensive duties, which are crucial to Manchester City’s success.
Last season, Walker did not score any goals but provided five assists across 47 appearances in all competitions. In fact, Walker even joked on the podcast that he would treat Hughes to lunch the day after he scores for Pep Guardiola’s side.
