BREAKING NEWS:Arsenal is nearing the transfer of a former Newcastle United player, according to updates from Fabrizio Romano.

Mikel Merino, a member of Spain’s victorious Euro 2024 squad, is reportedly nearing a transfer to Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners have finished as runners-up to Manchester City in the last two Premier League seasons and are determined to challenge for the title under manager Mikel Arteta.

After pursuing Merino’s signature throughout the summer, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal is making significant progress in negotiations. An agreement on a transfer fee with Real Sociedad could be reached soon.

Romano shared on the platform X that a verbal agreement is close, with personal terms settled as Merino is eager to join Arsenal. The proposed deal is expected to exceed €30 million, and discussions are ongoing to finalize the transfer.

Merino’s potential move to Arsenal would mark his return to the Premier League after a six-year absence. His previous stint in England was with Newcastle United during the 2017/18 season.

Initially joining Newcastle on loan in the summer of 2017, Merino’s impressive performances quickly led to a permanent transfer. However, he was sold to Real Sociedad at the end of the season, with Newcastle making a modest profit.

Since then, Merino has established himself as a key player for Real Sociedad and has earned 28 caps for the Spanish national team. His first appearance for Spain came in a Nations League match against Germany in 2020.

A move to Arsenal would bring Merino back to the English top flight, where he would aim to make a significant impact and help the Gunners challenge for major honors.
