Manchester United is actively seeking a £34 million “box-crasher” to fill the void left by Casemiro, highlighting their ambition in the current transfer window. Under new ownership from INEOS, the club has already made significant moves by signing promising defender Leny Yoro from Lille and striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
Following a disappointing 2023/24 Premier League season, where they finished eighth, United salvaged their campaign with an FA Cup victory over Manchester City, clinching the title 2-1 with first-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. This win secured their qualification for the Europa League, but the club’s larger objective is to return to the Champions League by the 2025/26 season.
Reports indicate that Manchester United is exploring options to strengthen their midfield, with PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman emerging as a potential alternative to PSG’s Manuel Ugarte.
To facilitate this acquisition, it seems that Scott McTominay could be the midfielder making way, with United reportedly valuing the Scotland international at £40 million.
Veerman is currently valued at £34 million by Transfermarkt and enjoyed a productive season at PSV, making 41 appearances, scoring seven goals, and providing 19 assists, totaling 3,420 minutes on the pitch.
Utilizing FBref’s player comparison tool, Veerman has been noted for his similarity to Manchester City’s Rodri, particularly after a strong showing at Euro 2024.
As United looks to replace Casemiro, Veerman could be a perfect fit alongside Mainoo in midfield. He possesses technical skills on the ball akin to Rodri, excelling in defensive coverage, breaking up counterattacks, and controlling game tempo.
His ability to contribute offensively would be vital for unlocking Mainoo’s potential in advanced positions.
Described as a “box-crasher” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Veerman not only contributes defensively but also showcases impressive creative abilities.
He averages 4.91 key passes and 11.86 progressive passes per 90 minutes, comparable to Rodri’s numbers, who is recognized as one of the best in the world for progressive passing.
The significant difference in their pass attempts highlights Manchester City’s possession-oriented style, which has contributed to Rodri’s success.
Veerman’s high passing volume and technical security would enhance United’s build-up play, allowing Mainoo to occupy more advanced positions.
Additionally, Veerman has demonstrated solid defensive capabilities, making 2.57 tackles and 1.13 blocks per 90 minutes, statistics that align closely with Rodri’s and reflect a similar standard to Casemiro, who is experiencing a decline due to age.
