Matheus Cunha of Wolves had a prime chance to equalize following a significant mistake by William Saliba but squandered the opportunity, sending the ball wide and missing his team’s best opportunity to level the score.

Bukayo Saka brought relief to the Arsenal supporters when he scored at the near post with 16 minutes remaining, calming nerves and securing Arsenal’s victory on the opening weekend of the season.

Arsenal started the match energetically, creating the first real chance after 14 minutes when Kai Havertz played Saka into the right side of the box. Saka cut inside Rayan Ait-Nouri and forced a save from Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa at his near post.

Arsenal kept up the pressure, with Ben White firing a shot wide from the edge of the area, Saka shooting directly at Sa from a Havertz assist, and Declan Rice missing the target from a promising position as Wolves’ defense struggled.

The breakthrough came shortly after. Saka received the ball in space on the right wing, and as Mario Lemina was slow to close him down, Saka’s in-swinging cross found Havertz, who darted in between Sa and Wolves’ debutant defender Yerson Mosquera to head Arsenal into the lead.

Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Raya, made a crucial save in the 35th minute to maintain their advantage. Hwang Hee-chan found space to deliver a cross to Jorgen Strand Larsen, who shook off Saliba with clever movement and headed towards goal, only for Raya to deny him with an excellent one-handed save.

Arsenal continued to dominate in the second half. They should have doubled their lead when Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cut-back found Thomas Partey, who shot wide from the edge of the box.

Rayan Ait-Nouri almost punished Arsenal’s missed opportunities when he struck a shot just wide from 25 yards out, reminding the home side of the slim margin of their lead.

A few moments later, Arsenal nearly gifted Wolves an equalizer when Saliba’s careless pass was intercepted by Cunha, whose rushed attempt was directed straight at Raya.

Arsenal responded, with Saka setting up Martin Odegaard for a long-range effort that Sa saved well.

Finally, Saka eased the tension in the stadium by scoring Arsenal’s second goal. Receiving the ball on the right side of the penalty area, he created space for himself and unleashed a powerful shot that flew past Sa at his near post, sealing a 2-0 victory for Arsenal.
