This season marks the first since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a stake in Manchester United, and significant changes have already taken place. The club has strengthened its backroom staff with the addition of Ruud van Nistelrooy, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox, signaling a new era of management.
Last season was disappointing for Manchester United, as they ended with a negative goal difference. They conceded 58 goals while only scoring 57, which was the worst among the teams that finished above them in the league standings.
The pre-season was marred by injuries, including one to their major summer signing, Leny Yoro, who might not debut in the Premier League until the autumn. Meanwhile, in their last encounter, Fulham secured a rare 2-1 victory at Old Trafford in February, ending an 18-game winless run against the Red Devils.
Fulham finished just five places below Manchester United last season, scoring 55 goals, only two less than their upcoming opponents.
Their goals are often spread across the team, and they have strengthened their attacking lineup with the arrival of Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal. Andreas Pereira, a former Manchester United player, will also be eager to make an impact against his old club.
Despite Fulham’s victory at Old Trafford earlier this year, it was only their second win at the stadium since 1963, and they have historically struggled away from home. Manchester United, on the other hand, faced significant defensive issues last season, with their backline often being too easy to breach.
Luke Shaw missed the Community Shield and might also be absent for the opening match, whereas Fulham has remained relatively injury-free and will aim to start their season strongly.
Fulham ended last season on a high, with a 4-0 win over Luton and a victory against West Ham on the road, but their last trip to Manchester saw them thrashed 4-0 by champions Manchester City.
Fulham lost key defender Tosin Adarabioyo to Chelsea and saw Tim Ream return to the United States, potentially weakening their defense. However, their midfield remains strong, while Manchester United struggled to score last season and could be without Rasmus Hojlund for the opener.
Alejandro Garnacho, who had a breakout season last year, scoring in big matches including the FA Cup final, is expected to start. His early-season form, including a goal against Manchester City in the Community Shield, makes him a promising individual bet option.
