Mikel Arteta has emphasized that Gabriel Martinelli remains a key player in his tactical plans, even with the heightened competition following the arrival of Raheem Sterling. Martinelli has played an essential role in Arsenal’s growth under Arteta, who recently secured a new three-year contract with the club.
At 23, Martinelli had an outstanding 2022/23 season, scoring 15 goals. However, his form has dipped over the past year due to injuries and the emergence of Leandro Trossard. With Sterling joining Arsenal on transfer deadline day, the competition for starting spots has intensified. Martinelli started in the first two games of the season but was benched for the 1-1 draw against Brighton before the international break.
As Sterling prepares to make his debut against Tottenham, Arteta was asked about Martinelli’s position in the squad. He responded by stating that at this level, decisions are made weekly based on preparation, playing style, and the specific requirements of each match.
Arteta stressed the importance of having wingers capable of excelling in one-on-one situations, exploiting spaces, and contributing to the team’s goal threat. He pointed out that Arsenal has several versatile players who can fill multiple attacking roles, especially with the ongoing injury concerns.
Looking ahead to the crucial north London derby, Arteta expressed his confidence in Sterling’s readiness to make an impact. He shared that his initial conversation with Sterling convinced him of the player’s desire to join Arsenal. Arteta recalled Sterling’s first words: “I was dreaming about this call,” which confirmed his enthusiasm for joining the team.
Arteta quickly realized that Sterling’s passion and determination made him the right fit for Arsenal. He mentioned that after just ten seconds of their conversation, he knew the player had to be brought in.
Sterling’s positive attitude, energy, and strong motivation to prove himself were evident from the start. Arteta noted that when a player demonstrates such commitment, it’s immediately clear, and he believes Sterling’s qualities will significantly contribute to the team.
