In a recent analysis of Manchester United’s struggles this season, pundit Tim Sherwood has strongly urged manager Erik ten Hag to consider resting young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the upcoming League Cup clash against Barnsley. According to Sherwood, Mainoo’s performance has dipped significantly, notably in a recent match against Southampton where he lost possession 14 times.
Sherwood suggested that Mainoo, who has shown great potential but is experiencing a rough patch, needs a break to reassess and regain his sharpness. Instead of sticking with Mainoo, Sherwood proposed that Ten Hag should opt for Manuel Ugarte, a summer signing who has yet to make a major impact but possesses the qualities needed to boost United’s midfield.
Manchester United’s season has been marked by inconsistency, with defensive lapses and lack of control in midfield raising concerns. Despite a much-needed win over Southampton, the team’s performance was far from convincing, highlighting the need for tactical changes.
Mainoo, regarded as a promising talent, has struggled to maintain possession and perform to his usual standards. ESPN’s Adam Brown rated him a 5/10 for his performance against Southampton, emphasizing his struggles to control the game. Overplaying young talents like Mainoo can lead to burnout, so a rest could be beneficial for him.
In contrast, Ugarte’s physical readiness and defensive statistics make him a compelling option. The Uruguayan midfielder ranks highly in Europe for tackles and interceptions, suggesting he could provide the defensive stability United needs.
He has already shown his fitness during international matches and could use the League Cup tie against Barnsley as an opportunity to get accustomed to Ten Hag’s system without the intense pressure of a Premier League match.
Sherwood’s call for Mainoo to be rested and for Ugarte to be given a chance is based on the belief that this would not only protect Mainoo from burnout but also strengthen United’s overall midfield performance.
Resting Mainoo would allow him to recharge, while Ugarte could gain match fitness and integrate into the team, providing a balanced approach for Manchester United’s continued progress this season.
