Pep Guardiola has admitted that he will not prevent a £35 million player, believed to be Manchester City’s goalkeeper Ederson, from leaving the club this summer if the player chooses to do so. Following Manchester City’s penalty shootout loss to Barcelona, Guardiola addressed one of the club’s main concerns: the potential departure of key players ahead of the 2024/2025 season.
Guardiola’s focus is now on preparing his squad for the upcoming season, which includes keeping an eye on possible transfers, fitness levels, and player motivation. While Manchester City gears up for pre-season, the Catalan manager will closely monitor which players will stay for the next campaign. Once this becomes clear, the club can plan its summer transfer activities accordingly.
Ederson, who has been an integral part of City’s success under Guardiola alongside stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and John Stones, has recently been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
This has created uncertainty about his future at the club. Earlier this month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that City’s second-choice goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega, could be promoted to the first team if Ederson leaves.
Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, revealed his deep affection for Ederson and expressed his desire for the goalkeeper to remain at Manchester City. However, Guardiola acknowledged that if Ederson decides to leave, he would reluctantly accept the decision. He described Ederson as a “porteirazo,” a term used in Spain and Portugal to refer to an exceptional goalkeeper, highlighting his importance to the team.
Despite the possibility of Ederson’s departure, Guardiola emphasized that the goalkeeper has contributed significantly to City’s success and remains someone he deeply admires.
Guardiola hopes for a swift resolution regarding Ederson’s future, as his exit would be a major loss for the team. Nevertheless, if Ederson chooses to move on, Guardiola stated that he would understand, despite the emotional difficulty of losing such a valuable player.
As Manchester City continues to prepare for the new season, Guardiola’s main concern will be maintaining the team’s strength and cohesion, with the future of key players like Ederson playing a crucial role in shaping the squad’s outlook for the 2024/2025 campaign.
