Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, known for his direct and often harsh analysis, expressed strong criticism regarding Liverpool’s opening goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
His focus was particularly on the poor defensive positioning of United’s full-backs, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, during the incident. The goal, which occurred in the 35th minute, resulted from a series of errors and questionable decisions that left Manchester United exposed to Liverpool’s attack.
The sequence began with Casemiro, one of United’s most seasoned midfielders, making a significant mistake. He attempted a risky first-time pass intended for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
However, Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch intercepted the pass, triggering a swift counter-attack. Gravenberch capitalized on the opportunity by driving forward with the ball before passing it to Mohamed Salah. Known for his vision and precision, Salah delivered an accurate cross into the box, where Luis Diaz was waiting. Diaz finished the move by heading the ball into the net, giving Liverpool the lead.
Keane’s frustration was evident, not only with Casemiro’s risky pass but also with the subsequent lack of defensive cover. He argued that both Mazraoui and Dalot had advanced too far up the pitch, assuming that Casemiro’s pass would reach its target, allowing United to transition into attack. This misjudgment left United’s defense vulnerable, and Liverpool exploited the space effectively. Keane voiced his concerns during halftime analysis on Sky Sports, criticizing the defensive setup.
Keane remarked, “Casemiro’s error… for all his experience, that is not a pass worth attempting first-time.” His criticism extended beyond Casemiro, pointing to the broader issue of defensive disorganization. Keane emphasized that United’s players seemed to lose their shape once possession was lost.
He questioned the positioning and awareness of the full-backs, highlighting their absence from key defensive areas. “Where is your right-back? Where is your left-back?” he asked, stressing that such lapses in discipline are unacceptable at this level.
