Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, did not conceal his frustration when discussing Arsenal’s tactics following their intense 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. The match, full of drama, saw City salvage a point with a stoppage-time goal from defender John Stones.
Arsenal, who had taken the lead earlier, were reduced to ten men after Leandro Trossard’s controversial red card just before halftime. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arsenal fiercely defended their lead, but Guardiola was displeased with their approach in the latter stages of the match.
As the second half progressed, several Arsenal players appeared to suffer from cramp, something Guardiola suspected was more of a tactical ploy than genuine fatigue. He believed these stoppages were deliberately timed to disrupt City’s attacking flow. To make matters worse for City, they lost their pivotal midfielder Rodri to injury in the first half, a concern Guardiola acknowledged afterward. While he did not yet have full details on Rodri’s condition, the injury could be a significant setback for City moving forward.
Beyond the physical challenges, Guardiola’s post-match remarks implied his dissatisfaction with the tactical decisions of his former assistant, Mikel Arteta. He subtly criticized Arsenal for orchestrating stoppages, suggesting that these were part of a broader strategy to frustrate City and limit their attacking opportunities.
