Zinedine Zidane has emerged as a possible contender for the managerial role at Manchester United, following his recent appearance at a Real Betis training session. This comes at a critical time for Manchester United, as current manager Erik ten Hag is facing increased pressure due to the team’s poor start to the season.
A recent 3-0 defeat to Liverpool has intensified the scrutiny surrounding Ten Hag’s future, leading to speculation that the club might be exploring other managerial options.
Zidane, both a football legend as a player and manager, has been without a coaching role since leaving Real Madrid in May 2021. Since then, his name has been linked with various high-profile coaching jobs, including potential roles at Bayern Munich and national teams such as the United States, Brazil, and Algeria. Despite these attractive opportunities, Zidane has chosen to bide his time, waiting for the perfect project that aligns with his vision and ambition.
In a recent interview, Zidane hinted at his openness to returning to management, stating, “Why not, anything is possible.” He added that while he is involved in other projects at the moment, he would certainly be interested in stepping back into a managerial role if the right conditions were met. Zidane has made it clear that he is waiting for a position that not only excites him but also offers the necessary support and environment for success.
At Manchester United, the club’s new leadership, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is reportedly considering various managerial candidates as Ten Hag’s struggles continue. Zidane is not the only name mentioned; other potential candidates like Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Gareth Southgate have also been discussed.
However, Zidane’s stature in the football world, combined with his impressive managerial achievements—most notably his two La Liga titles and three consecutive Champions League victories with Real Madrid—makes him a particularly attractive option.
Although Zidane’s future remains uncertain, his visit to Real Betis and his recent comments suggest that he is preparing for a return to football management soon. Should Manchester United’s leadership decide to make a change, Zidane’s global reputation and proven track record could provide the club with the winning mentality needed to steer them back to success. However, much depends on both Ten Hag’s ability to reverse the club’s fortunes and Zidane’s own readiness to take on such a demanding role.
