Manchester United have taken the lead against Southampton thanks to a towering header from Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch defender leapt above the Southampton defense to meet a well-placed corner, powerfully heading the ball into the net.
The goal came in the 25th minute, following a period of sustained pressure from United. They earned a corner after pushing Southampton’s defense back.
Bruno Fernandes stepped up to deliver the corner, curling a precise cross towards the far post where De Ligt was waiting. Using his physicality and timing, De Ligt rose higher than his marker and guided the ball past the Southampton goalkeeper, leaving the crowd in shock.
This goal is De Ligt’s first for Manchester United since his transfer over the summer, and it arrives at a crucial moment as the team aims to recover from a shaky start to the season. His contribution, both defensively and now offensively, is quickly cementing his importance to manager Erik ten Hag’s squad.
With this opening goal, United are now in control of the match, dominating possession and looking to add to their tally. Southampton, on the other hand, will need to quickly regroup if they hope to fight their way back into the contest.
