Manchester United is on the brink of a new chapter with Ruben Amorim set to take over as manager. The club’s recent struggles under Erik ten Hag, marked by only 11 points from nine league games, have led to the decision for a managerial change aimed at reinvigorating their season. Former United striker Dwight Yorke is optimistic about Amorim’s arrival and has recommended a bold move—signing Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez to strengthen United’s attacking lineup.
United’s difficulty in scoring has been a significant concern, with current forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee contributing just two Premier League goals combined this season. Speculation is growing that the club will prioritize a new striker in the January transfer window. Yorke believes Núñez’s physical presence and aggressive playing style would add much-needed energy to United’s attack. He envisions the Uruguayan striker thriving with regular game time, growing in confidence, and potentially becoming one of the league’s standout players.
Yorke has publicly shared his admiration for Núñez, urging United to consider an ambitious bid for him. “If I had to choose a number nine for United, Darwin Núñez would be it,” Yorke stated. He acknowledged that some might doubt this choice due to Núñez’s inconsistent performances but highlighted the forward’s untapped potential and powerful attributes, which could make him a perfect fit for United’s attacking needs.
Núñez, who transferred to Liverpool from Benfica for £85 million in 2022, has experienced moments of brilliance but has struggled with consistency. This season, he has only scored one Premier League goal. Nonetheless, Yorke remains convinced that a change of environment and consistent starting opportunities could allow Núñez to excel and showcase his abilities more effectively.
Yorke further emphasized that United needs a physically dominant forward, considering other strong players like Ollie Watkins but favoring Núñez for his added presence. He expressed confidence that, with steady playing time and the right support, Núñez could be a formidable force in English football.
Núñez is contracted with Liverpool until 2028, but reports suggest that the club might seek another striker by 2025, potentially opening the door for a United bid. Such a scenario could provide Amorim the chance to bring in a dynamic forward to rejuvenate the squad’s attack and help propel the team forward.
As Amorim prepares for his official debut against Ipswich Town after the November international break, he is already setting the stage for significant changes. Reports indicate that he plans to revamp the team by putting several players, including Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, and Antony, on the transfer list to manage wages and streamline the squad. United fans are hopeful these adjustments, along with a potential star signing, signal a revival for the club.
