Ruud van Nistelrooy praised five standout Manchester United players after their 1-1 draw against Chelsea, highlighting solid defensive and midfield contributions despite United’s current challenges in the Premier League.
United initially looked set for victory after Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty with 20 minutes left, following a foul on Rasmus Højlund. However, Chelsea quickly leveled the score, leaving United with just a point. This result places United 13th in the league after ten games, with only 12 points, reflecting their ongoing struggles this season.
Yet, Van Nistelrooy focused on the positives. He commended the efforts of five United players who, he felt, delivered impressive performances. He acknowledged their hard work, particularly in defense, to keep Chelsea’s attack in check.
He singled out Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt for their roles at the heart of United’s defense, praising them for handling Chelsea’s offense effectively. Van Nistelrooy shared his observations with Sky Sports, noting their contributions as essential in limiting Chelsea’s goal-scoring chances.
Another key player was Noussair Mazraoui, whose performance earned him the Man of the Match title. Mazraoui stood out with his decisive tackling and strong positioning, which helped prevent Chelsea from gaining control. While the defense held firm, United’s attacking trio faced difficulties.
The forwards struggled to find opportunities and appeared less cohesive. Marcus Rashford, who began with promise, faded after switching wings with Alejandro Garnacho, a tactical move by Van Nistelrooy that surprised some fans. The switch seemed to disrupt United’s momentum, as they lacked the necessary creativity up front to break down Chelsea’s defense.
As United prepares for a new phase under incoming head coach Ruben Amorim, there are multiple areas needing improvement. In particular, Amorim will likely prioritize enhancing United’s offensive capabilities. With limited scoring output so far this season, United’s lack of goals has become a pressing concern. Addressing this issue, as well as ensuring greater consistency from players like Rashford, will be key to United’s progress.
Despite the mixed results, Van Nistelrooy’s praise highlights that, even during a tough season, some individual performances offer a foundation for United to build upon.
Martinez, De Ligt, and Mazraoui showcased their potential as strong defensive options, while Rashford and Garnacho showed glimpses of their attacking skill, albeit inconsistently. Van Nistelrooy’s positive assessment reflects his faith in the players’ abilities, emphasizing that with the right adjustments and leadership, United may find a path to stronger performances.
