Manuel Ugarte was one of five major signings made by Manchester United this summer, yet he is already facing criticism as Erik ten Hag’s transfer strategy comes under scrutiny. The club’s spending in the transfer market has drawn negative attention, and Ugarte’s recent performance has only intensified the debate about whether the club is making wise decisions with its player acquisitions.
Dutch football legend Marco van Basten did not hold back in his criticism of Ugarte after United’s loss to Tottenham. The Uruguayan midfielder, signed from PSG, was brought in to strengthen the Red Devils’ midfield but struggled against Spurs at Old Trafford. Despite spending just one season in Paris, there were high expectations for Ugarte’s impact in England, but his early struggles have fueled skepticism about his signing.
Van Basten openly questioned Erik ten Hag’s decision to bring Ugarte to Manchester United. He criticized the club’s spending under the Dutch manager, calling it excessive and unwise. The former footballer stated on Ziggo Sport that Ugarte’s €50 million (£42.3m) price tag was unjustified and expressed disbelief that the midfielder was even considered a suitable signing for the club. His comments added to the growing criticism of United’s transfer dealings under Ten Hag.
Ugarte was previously a transfer target for Chelsea, with his defensive contributions in midfield making him an attractive option. His tackling stats suggested he could bring much-needed stability to United’s midfield. However, his initial struggles have raised concerns about his ability to adapt. While his performances at PSG showed promise, the chaotic environment at United has not provided him with the ideal platform to succeed.
Former Premier League player Robbie Earle offered a more sympathetic perspective on Ugarte’s situation. Speaking on NBC, he pointed out that Manchester United lacks a clear playing identity, which makes it difficult for any new signing to thrive. Earle suggested that Ugarte, who was expected to form a midfield partnership with Kobbie Mainoo, has been thrown into a disorganized team, making his struggles somewhat understandable.
Van Basten also extended his criticism to the entire Manchester United squad, arguing that the team lacks standout players. He questioned whether any world-class talent currently exists within the squad, citing Rashford’s poor form, Casemiro’s decline, and the lack of leadership on the field. While he acknowledged that Bruno Fernandes and Andre Onana are solid players, he claimed that they alone are not enough to elevate the team.
The broader issue highlighted by Van Basten is United’s overall recruitment strategy and tactical approach. Ugarte was expected to be a key part of the team’s defensive midfield, but if he is already struggling, it raises deeper questions about how well he fits into Ten Hag’s system. Poor squad building and a lack of clear direction have made it difficult for even talented players to shine at the club.
While Van Basten’s criticism is harsh, Earle’s perspective suggests that Ugarte’s struggles are not entirely his fault.
