Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, did not hold back in voicing his frustration over Robert Lewandowski’s reaction to being substituted during their La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano.
The incident occurred on Monday, February 17, at the Montjuïc Stadium in the 24th round of the league. Despite Barcelona securing a narrow 1-0 victory, Lewandowski’s visible displeasure upon being taken off the pitch became a major talking point.
The Polish striker had given Barcelona the lead in the 28th minute, successfully converting a penalty earned by Inigo Martinez.
As the match progressed, Flick opted to make a tactical change in the 81st minute, replacing Lewandowski with Ferran Torres. However, the experienced forward did not take the decision well, showing clear signs of frustration as he exited the field.
During the post-match press conference, Flick was asked about Lewandowski’s reaction to being substituted. In response, the German coach firmly stated: “For him, it’s always about scoring goals and contributing to the team’s success. But ultimately, the decisions regarding substitutions are mine. Flick went on to clarify his stance, reinforcing the idea that his choices are based on what benefits the team as a whole rather than any single player’s personal ambitions. “It’s not up to him to decide,” he continued. “I always support him and trust him to lead the attack. He started today and played a crucial role by scoring an important goal, which I’m pleased with. But when it comes to substitutions, it’s my responsibility, and players must accept that.”
While Lewandowski’s frustration was evident, his reaction could raise concerns about his relationship with Flick and his willingness to accept decisions that may not align with his personal expectations. Despite the tension, Barcelona managed to hold onto their slim lead, securing three crucial points in their pursuit of success in La Liga.
