Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy may largely depend on their performance in the Europa League. With their Premier League campaign shaping up to be one of their worst in history, manager Ruben Amorim’s only remaining hope for success lies in their European journey.
To prevent another disastrous season, the club must undergo serious squad rebuilding.
However, this will be a challenging task, especially given the number of players likely to leave. One of the key areas in need of reinforcement is the midfield.
Both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen appear to be past their prime, and there are uncertainties surrounding Kobbie Mainoo’s future.
If United fail to secure European football, financial constraints could force them to make difficult decisions regarding player retention.
Currently, United are preparing for their second-leg Europa League clash against Real Sociedad, with the tie delicately balanced at 1-1. A victory would keep their hopes alive for winning a trophy they last secured in 2017. Success in the competition is crucial if they are to attract top-tier signings.
One such target is Frenkie De Jong. Reports from Spain indicate that United have submitted a £57.8m (€65m) bid for the Barcelona midfielder, though it has been rejected ahead of the summer transfer window.
With only a year left on his contract, Barcelona are keen to extend his deal. However, if an agreement is not reached, they may reconsider their stance on selling him.
Despite his talent, De Jong has struggled for regular game time at Barcelona, starting just four La Liga matches and four of their 10 Champions League fixtures this season. With Pedri, Gavi, Marc Casado, and Fermin Lopez ahead of him in the pecking order, his future at the club remains uncertain. United have pursued him in previous transfer windows, but their current struggles may hinder their chances of securing his signature.
In addition to potential signings, United are expected to offload several players this summer. Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen, Tom Heaton, and Victor Lindelof are all set to depart when their contracts expire.
More exits could follow as the club seeks funds for new arrivals. Reports suggest that Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony are not in Amorim’s plans, while Casemiro, Eriksen, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund may also be shown the exit door.
Given that Casemiro, Mount, and Hojlund cost nearly £200 million combined, United will likely have to accept financial losses to facilitate a squad overhaul.
