Spanish newspaper El Nacional reported that Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, expressed great satisfaction with the victory, recognizing it as a crucial step towards the next round. The German tactician lauded his team’s mentality and resilience in what was an intense and hard-fought contest.
One of the standout performers in the match was Barcelona’s Polish goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, who made several decisive saves to preserve the clean sheet. Flick did not hold back in his praise for Szczesny, acknowledging his pivotal role in securing the win. After the match, he reportedly told the goalkeeper, “This victory is thanks to you. What a phenomenal performance.”
In addition to Szczesny, Barcelona’s midfield maestro, Pedri, received high praise from Flick. The young Spaniard delivered an extraordinary performance, covering vast areas of the pitch and compensating for Barcelona’s numerical disadvantage from the early minutes of the game.
Flick was so impressed that, in the locker room, he told Pedri, “I am fortunate to have a player like you in my team.” The coach viewed Pedri as the most influential outfield player on the night, second only to Szczesny.
However, despite the overall success, Flick was not entirely pleased with every player’s performance. He was reportedly frustrated with left-back Alejandro Balde’s display, urging him to regain focus and improve in the coming weeks. The coach made it clear that if Balde’s performances did not improve, he would be replaced by Gerard Martin in the starting lineup.
Following the match, Barcelona president Joan Laporta personally went down to the dressing room to congratulate the players and coaching staff on their hard-fought victory. He specifically singled out Szczesny, echoing Flick’s sentiments by telling him, “Flick was absolutely right to put his trust in you. You saved the team from a near-certain defeat tonight.”
With this win, Barcelona edges closer to the quarter-finals, but they must remain focused ahead of the decisive second leg.
