Barcelona is gearing up for a challenging La Liga match against its Catalan counterpart, Girona, in the 29th round of the competition. Currently, Barcelona sits atop the league standings with 63 points, holding a three-point lead over their long-time rival, Real Madrid.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, the club is actively exploring ways to strengthen its attacking lineup for the upcoming season. One of the names recently linked to Barcelona is Luis Díaz, the Liverpool winger. However, head coach Hansi Flick has reservations about acquiring him and has communicated his concerns to the club’s management.
Flick’s main reason for dismissing the idea of signing Díaz is the Colombian’s age. By January 2026, Díaz will turn 29, and Flick prefers younger players who can contribute both in the short and long term.
Since assuming his role as Barcelona’s head coach, Flick has prioritized building a squad centered around youthful talents to ensure the team’s long-term stability and success. Given this philosophy, pursuing Díaz does not align with his vision.
Despite Díaz’s proven track record with Liverpool and the Colombian national team, securing his transfer would require a substantial financial investment. Flick believes that if Barcelona is going to spend heavily on an attacking player, it should be someone with significant growth potential.
Instead, Flick favors the signing of Athletic Bilbao’s rising star, Nico Williams. Unlike Díaz, Williams is only 22 years old, making him an ideal candidate for long-term development. His playing style—marked by speed, dribbling ability, and versatility—fits well within Barcelona’s footballing identity. Flick sees him as a more suitable choice for reinforcing the team’s attack.
Additionally, Williams has strong ties with some of Barcelona’s young talents, including Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde, both of whom have played alongside him for the Spanish national team. This existing chemistry could ease his transition into the squad and improve his overall effectiveness.
Given Flick’s preference for younger signings, all signs point to Barcelona continuing its search for promising talents rather than experienced stars.
As of now, Nico Williams appears to be the club’s top target, with the potential to become a key figure in Flick’s long-term project.
