One of Barcelona’s key objectives in the upcoming transfer window is to secure a new right-back to replace Jules Kounde, particularly after Hector Fort failed to win the confidence of coach Hansi Flick.
The disparity between the two players is evident: while Kounde has accumulated 2,070 minutes in La Liga this season, Fort has only featured for 370 minutes. Given this gap in playing time, Barcelona’s management is eager to reinforce the right-back position with a more dependable option, potentially allowing Fort to gain experience elsewhere on loan.
According to reports from the Catalan newspaper Sport, one of the primary candidates Barcelona is considering is André Ratiu, the current right-back for Rayo Vallecano. Sporting director Deco has been monitoring Ratiu’s performances closely over the past few weeks.
His strength and defensive solidity make him one of the standout full-backs in La Liga, attributes that align with Barcelona’s needs.
Ratiu gained widespread recognition for his exceptional defensive display against Vinicius Junior during a clash between Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano last season. In that match, the Romanian defender successfully neutralized Vinicius, preventing him from scoring or assisting, which significantly impacted Madrid’s attacking play.
This performance highlighted Ratiu’s ability to handle elite-level wingers, a crucial trait for any full-back facing La Liga’s top attackers.
Beyond his defensive capabilities, Ratiu possesses impressive physical attributes. This season, he has registered the second-fastest sprint speed in La Liga, making him a formidable defender in one-on-one duels, particularly against rapid wingers. His speed and defensive awareness allow him to cover large areas of the pitch effectively, which would be beneficial for Barcelona’s tactical setup.
While primarily recognized for his defensive skills, Ratiu has also contributed in attack. He has scored two goals and provided two assists this season, demonstrating his ability to support offensive play when required.
However, acquiring him will not be an easy task, as his contract includes a €25 million release clause. Rayo Vallecano appears reluctant to negotiate a lower fee, which means Barcelona would have to meet this valuation if they want to secure his services.
Although Kounde has been Barcelona’s first-choice right-back, the club has struggled to find a truly reliable player in this position for nearly a decade. Strengthening this area remains a priority, and Ratiu’s skill set makes him an appealing option for the club’s future.
