Manchester United continues to struggle with inconsistency, showing no signs of improvement even after parting ways with Erik ten Hag midway through the season. The club took a bold step by appointing Ruben Amorim, a promising Portuguese coach who had impressed with Sporting Lisbon.
However, his arrival has not brought the desired turnaround, and the team’s performances remain underwhelming. Currently sitting in 14th place in the English Premier League, United risks missing out on European competitions next season.
According to Spanish newspaper El Nacional, speculation has already begun regarding another managerial change, with Xavi Hernandez emerging as a potential candidate. Xavi, who left Barcelona almost a year ago, has been linked with several clubs, including Manchester United.
Reports suggest that initial discussions were held months ago, but the former Barcelona coach has yet to decide on his next managerial role. Nevertheless, he is eager to return to coaching soon.
A move to Old Trafford is reportedly an enticing prospect for Xavi, and he has resumed talks with Jim Ratcliffe. If he is chosen as the new manager, Xavi is expected to push for key reinforcements, particularly from Barcelona. His first demand is Frenkie de Jong, a player he deeply admires. De Jong was a crucial part of Xavi’s plans at Barcelona, and the coach repeatedly resisted offers for the Dutch midfielder.
Throughout his tenure, Xavi defended De Jong against criticism, making it clear that he valued the former Ajax star as a key component of his tactical setup. It is no surprise that Xavi would want to reunite with De Jong at Manchester United.
Another player Xavi is keen on is Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan defender played an essential role in Xavi’s defensive structure at Barcelona, although their relationship reportedly cooled in recent months.
Despite this, Xavi remains interested in bringing Araujo to Old Trafford, believing that his presence would significantly strengthen United’s defense.
Manchester United has already struggled in midfield and defense, areas that De Jong and Araujo could reinforce effectively. The club had previously targeted De Jong before Xavi was considered for the managerial position, making this potential transfer strategy even more plausible.
As the speculation intensifies, Xavi’s return to management—accompanied by key Barcelona signings—could play a crucial role in shaping Manchester United’s future direction.
