Last summer, Sofyan Amrabat, 27, joined Manchester United on loan from Fiorentina for a fee of €10 million, with an option to buy him for €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons.
Despite Amrabat’s desire to stay at United, the club’s management does not appear to share this sentiment.
Amrabat is likely to return to Fiorentina at the end of June, as Fiorentina has already started negotiations with Galatasaray about a possible permanent transfer.
However, Manchester United still has time to decide whether to activate their purchase option.
When Amrabat arrived at United last summer, there were high expectations, especially since he had attracted interest from several other clubs before joining on transfer deadline day.
However, adjusting to the Premier League was difficult for him, and by early 2024, he found himself on the bench, with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo being preferred in his place.
Despite these early struggles, Amrabat regained his starting position in May, delivering impressive performances against top teams like Arsenal and Newcastle United.
He also started in the FA Cup final, replacing the slightly injured Casemiro. These matches demonstrated Amrabat’s potential value to the team, but the club’s leadership remains unsure about committing to a permanent deal.
Amrabat has earned praise from various sources, including Morocco’s national team manager Walid Regragui, who called him a “world-class” player.
Nevertheless, United’s management remains hesitant, with their final decision likely hinging on the club’s managerial situation.
If Erik ten Hag continues as Manchester United’s manager, Amrabat might have a chance to stay, as Ten Hag’s influence could sway the board in his favor.
Conversely, if Ten Hag is replaced, a new manager may opt to pursue different targets rather than retaining Amrabat.
