Instead, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi took his place, as announced by Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente. This substitution was surprising given Rodri’s importance to both the team and the nation.
Rodri experienced discomfort in his left hamstring during the first half. Jude Bellingham checked on him when he showed signs of distress, bending over in pain.
A Spanish team doctor met Rodri as he headed into the tunnel at halftime. Jordan Pickford, observing the situation, seemed to recognize that Rodri would not be returning to the pitch, as Rodri held his face in his hands in apparent frustration.
Just two minutes into the second half, Nico Williams scored, putting Spain ahead and diminishing England’s hopes of taking advantage of Rodri’s absence. Spain had a remarkable record in matches where Rodri had started, winning 14 of the last 15 games in regular time, with additional victories in extra time and penalty shootouts.
