Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, intent on rejoining Real Madrid, appears ready to take a wage cut to facilitate the move. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper in 2018 when he transferred from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea for £72 million, is looking to depart Stamford Bridge this summer.
Kepa left a positive impression at Real Madrid during his loan spell last season. Reports from the Spanish news outlet AS suggest that he is prepared to accept a significant reduction in his current £150,000-per-week wages to make the transfer permanent.
His eagerness to reunite with Real Madrid and work under Carlo Ancelotti highlights his determination to secure a spot with the La Liga giants.
Chelsea, meanwhile, has generated around £89 million from the departures of players like Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, and Lewis Hall, helping to balance their finances and stay within Profit and Sustainability regulations. This financial prudence has enabled the club to target new signings, such as Tosin Adarabioyo and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, without overspending.
Despite these moves, Chelsea remains focused on offloading more players to reduce their wage bill further and create space for additional recruits. Romelu Lukaku, with a substantial weekly wage of £325,000, is among the high earners Chelsea is keen to transfer, with AC Milan and Napoli showing interest. Other potential exits include Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, and Trevoh Chalobah.
Kepa’s departure would significantly aid Chelsea’s wage restructuring efforts. His willingness to accept a pay cut underscores his determination to return to Real Madrid, where he believes he can revive his career after a challenging stint in the Premier League.
Although he has also drawn interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, Chelsea rejected their initial bid, leaving the path open for Real Madrid as they navigate their own goalkeeping uncertainties with Andriy Lunin’s contract situation.
As the August 30 transfer deadline approaches, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are working diligently to finalize the squad.
The club’s strategic approach this summer combines financial discipline with targeted strengthening, aiming to support manager Enzo Maresca’s vision for the upcoming season.
