TRANSFER NEWS CONFIRMED: He is set to replace Ben White and Timber, as Arsenal submits a bid to activate the release clause of a top-tier defender who turned down Chelsea on two occasions.

Arsenal have reportedly initiated discussions to sign a Barcelona player currently preparing for a Euro 2024 last-16 match. Mikel Arteta aims to strengthen Arsenal’s squad for the upcoming season, addressing the need for more depth, particularly in positions where they lacked adequate backup last season, such as for players like William Saliba and Bukayo Saka.

Arteta has a few different profiles on his wishlist this summer, and ensuring there are capable substitutes for key players is a priority. Saliba and Saka are almost irreplaceable, but the squad could be better equipped to give them necessary rest.

As part of this strategy, Arsenal has been linked with several wingers, including Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, who is currently playing in Euro 2024.

It appears Williams is not the only target Arsenal is eyeing at the tournament. They have also set their sights on Barcelona’s Jules Kounde. Kounde, who has been playing as France’s starting right-back in Germany, is versatile enough to cover the entire backline. Journalist Gerard Romero, an expert on Barcelona, revealed that Arsenal has expressed interest in the Frenchman.

Arsenal’s need for a backup to Saliba at right center-back has been evident, and Kounde could potentially fill that role. However, given his impressive performances for France, it is unlikely that Kounde would accept a backup position. Romero suggests that Kounde would be a starter if he joined Arsenal.

Moreno shared on Twitch that Arsenal recently contacted Barcelona about Kounde’s availability. While these discussions are at an early stage, it indicates Arsenal might pursue the deal more aggressively.

Barcelona acquired Kounde for £42 million in 2023, and with Hansi Flick newly appointed as their manager, they might be reluctant to let him go. This could complicate negotiations, especially since Arsenal’s technical director Edu has been cautious about overpaying for players.

Additionally, Napoli is reportedly considering a move for an Arsenal defender this summer, which could increase the urgency for Arsenal to secure a versatile player like Kounde.

The situation underscores Arsenal’s strategic planning to enhance squad depth and flexibility, crucial for their aspirations in the upcoming season.
