Arsenal may be poised to disrupt Chelsea’s ongoing negotiations with Napoli for the transfer of Victor Osimhen, following reports that Paris Saint-Germain has withdrawn from the race. Arsenal has already secured two signings this summer: goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford for £27 million and Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £42 million.
However, Arsenal remains in the market for a striker, especially with Eddie Nketiah potentially moving to Marseille, despite Arsenal rejecting the French club’s recent bid. Reports suggest that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen on adding a new number nine to the squad and may attempt to outmaneuver Chelsea in their pursuit of Osimhen.
While the Gunners have had their eye on the Napoli striker for some time, they recognize that signing him would be costly. Nonetheless, Arsenal views a top-tier striker as the missing piece in their lineup as they aim to close the gap with Manchester City in the Premier League next season.
In addition to their search for a striker, Arsenal is also targeting reinforcements in central midfield. The club has been linked with several players, including Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes.
There are speculations that Arsenal might try to negotiate a deal involving their goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is valued at around £30 million, as part of an offer for Guimaraes.
Although Guimaraes has a release clause reportedly set at £100 million, there are rumors that Newcastle might consider selling him for a fee exceeding £80 million.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has also been linked with Mikel Merino, a midfielder from Real Sociedad. Journalist Charles Watts suggests that after securing the signing of Calafiori, Arsenal could intensify their efforts to acquire Merino, who has attracted interest from other clubs in Spain.
Merino’s contract situation at Real Sociedad could make him available at a favorable price, and Arsenal views him as a versatile player who could bolster their midfield and left-sided options.
Although there have been mentions of other midfield targets like Fabian Ruiz, Merino seems to be the primary focus for Arsenal as they prepare for the upcoming season.
