BREAKING NEWS: Live from Old Trafford, the Manchester United community shield had two key players ruled out and was not available for the match against Manchester City. “This is not what I anticipated, but this is football; you must always prepare for the worst. This puts me and my team at a significant disadvantage. It has been confirmed that two vital United players missed the community shield final against Manchester City.

Manchester United is set to kick off their season with a Community Shield clash against Manchester City at Wembley, a rematch of last May’s FA Cup final. Erik ten Hag is aiming to secure his third trophy in as many years, as he looks to start the new campaign on a strong note, with expectations of improvements throughout the team.

However, both teams will be without key players for this match. United is dealing with ongoing defensive injuries, while some of City’s stars are still on holiday and unavailable for selection.

Ten Hag faces the challenge of setting up his team without these crucial players, as they prepare for their final match before the Premier League season begins next Friday.

In goal, Andre Onana is expected to start. The Cameroon international, who was a regular fixture during his debut season at United, has been active throughout pre-season. Onana has hinted at adopting a more adventurous playing style in his second year at Old Trafford, but he is also aware that he needs to improve other aspects of his game.

In defense, Diogo Dalot, who returned late to Carrington this summer, is set to remain Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back, especially with Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubtful for the match against City. At left-back, Luke Shaw’s participation is uncertain as he only recently resumed pre-season training.

In his absence, 17-year-old Harry Amass might step in, potentially becoming United’s 251st academy graduate after gaining significant playtime during pre-season.

With Leny Yoro out for three months and Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof also doubtful, Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans are likely to be the only fit center-backs available to Ten Hag.

In midfield, Casemiro is expected to stay at Old Trafford, having played in all five of United’s pre-season matches. Kobbie Mainoo, who had a breakout year, is anticipated to play a key role in Ten Hag’s midfield and could start in the season opener.

If Mainoo is eased into the lineup, Mason Mount or Scott McTominay may play alongside Casemiro, supporting Bruno Fernandes. Despite missing pre-season due to Euro 2024 commitments, Fernandes is expected to be a reliable presence throughout the season.

In attack, Ten Hag faces a decision on who will start on the right wing among Amad, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Facundo Pellistri. Amad, who impressed during pre-season, is likely to have a significant role this season.

Marcus Rashford is expected to start on the left after a strong pre-season, with Ten Hag confident in his improved form. With Rasmus Hojlund sidelined for six weeks due to a hamstring injury, new signing Joshua Zirkzee is likely to make his debut for United in this match.
