Ilkay Gundogan has reportedly requested to leave Barcelona just one season after joining from Manchester City, with José Mourinho keen to bring him to Fenerbahçe.
According to reports, Gundogan, who signed a two-year contract with Barcelona last June, is now in the final year of his deal and is seeking a move away. The Spanish newspaper *Sport* claims the German midfielder has informed Barcelona of his desire to leave.
Gundogan was left out of the squad for Barcelona’s 2-1 La Liga win over Valencia, with manager Hansi Flick stating that his absence was due to injury rather than uncertainty about his future.
Flick added, “I think he’ll stay at Barcelona. He wasn’t at home tonight because he was hurting. I spoke with Ilkay, but that’s a private matter.”
*Sport* also reports that Gundogan is frustrated with the club and is seeking help in finding a new team. Potential destinations for the 33-year-old include Turkey and Saudi Arabia, with Fenerbahçe’s new manager, José Mourinho, particularly keen on signing him. Since taking charge in June, Mourinho has been active in the transfer market, adding several players to his squad and is determined to secure Gundogan’s services.
