Erik ten Hag, the current manager of Manchester United, has long desired to bring Dutch international Frenkie De Jong to the club. De Jong, valued at £86 million, previously played under ten Hag at Ajax before his transfer to Barcelona.
Two years ago, Manchester United reached an agreement with Barcelona for the Dutch midfielder, worth 80 million euros. However, De Jong opted to stay at the Nou Camp.
Recently, Spanish outlet Nacional reported that ten Hag has proposed a swap deal involving Antony to secure De Jong’s transfer to Manchester United.
Antony, a Brazilian international, was successful under ten Hag at Ajax but has struggled significantly in the Premier League. Antony joined Manchester United for £86 million from Ajax, yet he managed to score just once in 29 league games last season.
This proposal has raised eyebrows as ten Hag is willing to trade one of the team’s biggest disappointments for De Jong, who is a key player for Barcelona. Predictably, Barcelona is not interested in Antony, despite their need for a winger.
The Catalan club has Lamine Yamal as their starting right winger and Raphinha as his backup, both of whom are considered superior to the Manchester United winger.
Given this situation, it is clear that Manchester United needs to devise a more appealing offer if they hope to secure De Jong’s signature.
