Roy Keane, the former Manchester United captain renowned for his candid assessments, was critical of Liverpool’s opening goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford. His primary focus was on the defensive lapses of United’s full-backs, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, during the play that led to Liverpool taking the lead in the 35th minute. Keane’s analysis highlighted a series of errors and poor decisions by United that ultimately left them exposed to Liverpool’s attacking threat.
The breakdown began with Casemiro, one of United’s most seasoned midfielders, who made a critical error by attempting a risky first-time pass to young teammate Kobbie Mainoo.
Unfortunately, the pass was intercepted by Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, who quickly launched a counter-attack. Gravenberch drove forward and played the ball to Mohamed Salah, known for his precise passing. Salah then delivered an accurate cross into the box, where Luis Diaz was positioned to head the ball into the net, putting Liverpool in front.
Keane was visibly frustrated, not only with Casemiro’s misplaced pass but also with the overall defensive response from United. He particularly criticized Mazraoui and Dalot for pushing too far up the pitch, assuming Casemiro’s pass would find its target and allow United to transition into attack.
This error in judgment left gaping holes in United’s defense, which Liverpool capitalized on. Keane voiced his concerns during halftime on Sky Sports, expressing his disappointment with the team’s defensive organization.
He pointed out that Casemiro’s decision was unnecessarily risky and questioned the defensive discipline of United’s players, especially the full-backs. Keane emphasized that both the right-back and left-back were out of position, leaving United exposed. “You have no control here,” Keane remarked, underscoring the importance of defensive structure and awareness at the highest level of the game.
