Mason Greenwood’s once-promising international football career with England could take a different turn, as Jamaica emerges as a potential option for his future. Although Greenwood made his debut for England in 2020, he only played in one competitive match before turning 21.
This leaves him eligible to switch national teams under FIFA regulations, providing him with the opportunity to represent Jamaica, a possibility that has been gaining traction recently. This shift could give Greenwood a chance to start fresh as he works to rebuild both his personal and professional life.
Greenwood’s club career took a significant turn this week when Manchester United officially ended their association with the 21-year-old after an 18-month period of uncertainty.
His future at United became unclear following his arrest and charges of attempted rape, coercive behavior, and assault, which led to his suspension. However, in February 2023, the charges were dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.
Despite not being convicted, Greenwood’s reputation was heavily impacted, and after an internal review, Manchester United decided it was best for both parties to part ways, allowing him to pursue his career elsewhere.
A number of clubs have expressed interest in Greenwood, although most are considering loan deals rather than permanent transfers.
Among the clubs linked with him are Roma, Inter Milan, Atalanta, and Monaco, while teams from Germany, Spain, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia are also reportedly monitoring his situation. A possible reunion with José Mourinho at Roma has been mentioned as a potential move that could offer Greenwood the stability needed to rejuvenate his football career.
On the international front, Greenwood’s time with the England team was cut short after his debut, and despite hopes of a return, his arrest halted those plans. By early 2022, England manager Gareth Southgate was still open to reintegrating Greenwood, but following his arrest, any chances of him rejoining the squad were severely diminished.
Even if Greenwood revives his career, reports suggest that the likelihood of him playing for England again is slim due to the controversy and the abundance of talent in the England squad.
Given Greenwood’s Jamaican heritage, switching allegiance to Jamaica could be a logical next step. The Jamaica Football Federation has been interested in Greenwood since 2021, and recent indications suggest he is considering this option, which could offer him a new international platform and the chance to rebuild his career.
