Cole Palmer expressed his deep disappointment at Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino but remains optimistic about the future under new coach Enzo Maresca. Pochettino, despite securing a Europa Conference League qualification for Chelsea, left the club by mutual consent at the season’s end.
Enzo Maresca, who had previously led Leicester City to Premier League promotion, stepped in as his replacement.
Palmer, who was transferred to Chelsea in September for £40 million under Pochettino’s guidance, shared his sorrow over Pochettino’s departure. He credited the former manager for giving him a significant opportunity and fostering a strong professional relationship. “He just gave me the opportunity and the freedom and said: ‘Do what you do’.
I was [sorry to see him go] because he put his trust in me, and we built a good relationship,” Palmer told The Telegraph. He emphasized that Pochettino’s faith in him was a key factor in his development and current standing, including his place in the England squad.
Reflecting on his experiences, Palmer acknowledged the impact Pochettino had on his career.
He remarked that a different manager might not have provided him the same level of freedom and opportunities to excel at Chelsea. This personalized support was instrumental in his progress and visibility on the field.
Despite his sadness over Pochettino’s exit, Palmer is no stranger to Maresca’s coaching style, having previously worked with him during his time at Manchester City’s academy.
He recounted how Maresca played a pivotal role in his positional shift, moving him to right wing during his under-18 and under-23 years. “Enzo was the one who put me at right wing,” Palmer noted. “That was my first full season on the right. He’s a good coach, a really good coach. I think tactically he knows what he is doing. He will improve a lot of the players.”
Palmer’s comments reflect a blend of gratitude for Pochettino’s influence and a hopeful outlook towards Maresca’s potential to develop Chelsea’s squad further.
He remains optimistic that Maresca’s tactical acumen and familiarity with his playing style will benefit the team and aid in achieving success at Stamford Bridge.
